Figure 3 Birefringence measurement of a length of SMF-28 fiber in which different sections are coiled at different bend radii, resulting in different levels of bend- induced birefringence. It is clear that as the bend radius increases by a factor of √2, the induced birefringence increases by a factor of 2. In addition to the bend-

induced birefringence, the beginning of section 1 shows slightly higher birefringence at the end of a fiber protection tube. Curve 1 and curve 2 are consecutive measurements of the same fiber, illustrating the repeatability of the measurement.
